MADE IN PARALLEL

MADE IN PARALLEL is a leather + woodworking workshop out of Glen Ellen, California.  Each leather piece is obsessively daydreamed about, thoughtfully designed on paper and chipboard, proto-typed and tested, refined, hand cut/crafted/finished by me; Melissa Steenport.  Each wooden object/sculpture/vessel is born in my sketchbook and brought into the wild using locally sourced, donated, and foraged hardwoods.

This project was founded as a way to explore a tactile skill set, to hone my craft, to create timeless and utilitarian pieces, to explore form; and most importantly to highlight the inherent, individual beauty within raw materials.  Founded in 2012, this idea grew slowly as a way for me to explore interests rooted in craft and materiality.  Working full time in Architecture, this allows me to indulge creative notions on a different scale, purpose, and time frame.  MADE IN PARALLEL is exactly that, two aligned paths of mindset/exploration/material; each informing and at times challenging the other.

If you’d like to visit my studio: the Hill Road Atelier… let me know, I’d love to say hi!  Work will be released online through shop updates quarterly and will alternate by material (IE woodworking is quite messy). If you see something you’re interested in but it happens to be sold out, contact me and I can add it to the queue. Follow along on social media for upcoming projects, collaborations, pop-ups, and shop updates.
